Hyper-V Replication

Hyper-V Replication

Overview

BDRSuite offers agentless replication for Microsoft Hyper-V. This eliminates the need to install backup agents on each VM. It provides near continuous data protection with features like instant failovers and centralized management for efficient VM backup.

How to Get Started

Step 1: Download and Install BDRSuite Backup Server

  1. Click to Download BDRSuite Backup Server here
  2. To install the BDRSuite Backup Server, watch the below installation video.

Step 2: Create Backup Repository Configuration

Configure local or remote storage such as DAS, NAS, SAN, or use your own public cloud storage like S3, Azure, Google, S3 Compatible like Wasabi, MinIO, etc as a backup storage target to store backup data.

Step 3. Add Hyper-V as a Data Source

Navigate to ‘Data Sources - Hypervisors -> Microsoft Hyper-V' menu. Watch the How-to Video below for detailed instructions.

Step 4: Configure Hyper-V VM Replication

1. Select Hosts and/or VMs for Replication.
2. Exclusions (optional): Exclude specific VMs or Disks from replication.
3. Guest Processing Settings: Enable only if you want to perform transitionally consistent replication, log truncation, and system file exclusions on the VM guest OS.
4. Configure Replication Schedule.
5. Configure Target Selection.
6. Give a name and save the Replication job. The Replication will run as per schedule.
7. You can centrally manage and monitor Replication.

Step 5: Hyper-V VM Failover and Failback

Failover 1. Navigate to the 'VM Replication - Failover and Failback' menu 2. Click on the 'Restore Replica' button alongside the replication job you wish to restore. 3. Choose the 'Replica Type' as 'Failover'. 4. Choose the 'Restore Version'. 5. Choose the replica VMs you want to failover. 6. Review configuration and initiate the failover. Finalize Failover 1. Navigate to the 'VM Replication - Failover and Failback' menu 2. Click on the 'Restore Replica' button alongside the replication job you wish to restore. 3. Choose the 'Replica Type' as 'Finalize Failover'. 4. Choose the replica VM/s. 5.Choose the 'Finalize Type' as 'Undo Failover' or 'Permanent Failover'. 6. Review configuration and initiate the Finalize failover that you chose.

Key Features

  1. Agentless Backup: Perform host-level backup without installing backup agents on each VM.
  2. Flexible Backup Targets: Store Backup on Local/Remote Storage, Your Own Public Cloud or BDRCloud
  3. Incremental Backups: Efficiently backup only changes made since the last backup, reducing storage requirements and backup time
  4. Instant Boot VM: Instantly restore an entire VM in less than 15 mins to ensure business continuity
  5. Granular Recovery: Restore specific files & folders without restoring the entire machine
  6. Automated Scheduling: Set up and manage backup schedules to run at convenient times
  7. V2V Migration: Migrate your Hyper-V virtual machines to any hypervisor such as VMware, Proxmox, KVM, etc

Use Cases

  1. Remote Backup: Backup Hyper-V VMs from any location
  2. Ransomware Protection: Protect backup data from ransomware with Immutable Backups
  3. Disaster Recovery: Quickly restore a fully operational VM in the event of hardware failure or malware attacks
  4. System Migration: Easily move systems to new virtual environments
  5. Data Compliance: Maintain historical records of system states for regulatory compliance and auditing purpose
