With the File Level Recovery option from the BDRSuite Backup Server, you can quickly restore individual files and folders.
Step 1: Choose Host and Restore Type
Choose a VM/ Host that you wish to restore.
Now, select the File Level Recovery option and click Next.
Step 2: Choose Restore Version
Select a restore point to restore the backup data. BDRSuite Backup Server retains the restore points as per the retention policy you have selected for the backup job.
Full backup and Incremental backup restore points are viewed in the dropdown box structure.
Each incremental restore point is a virtual full backup that makes full data recovery possible in each step. This makes the restoration process easier without having to recover a full backup and all the previous increments.
If the restore point is denoted with symbols (d), (w), (m), (+P) at the end, it indicates the following:
- Daily Merge (d)
- Weekly Merge (w)
- Monthly Merge (m)
- Persistent boot changes (+P)
Daily, Weekly, and Monthly merges take place based on the retention policies you have configured.
If you select Restore version time-stamp with (+P), then you have enabled the option to ’Include persistent boot changes during restore’ option that includes the changes you performed in the VM/Host during the instant boot restore process.
Step 3: Select the Files/Folders
Select the files and folders you want to restore, by expanding the VM/ Host tree and their disks.
Step 4: Select Destination Host & Restore Location
Destination Host
You can restore your backup data either to the BDRSuite Backup Server or to the Source Host(The host from which the backup was performed)
Restore Location
You can either select the Original location or the alternate location when you choose to restore the backup data to the source host in the previous step.
If you have chosen to restore the backup data to ‘ This Server’ option i.e. the BDRSuite Backup Server, then you can directly choose the location on the server.
Restore Option
( If you have selected the Destination Host as the source host then this ‘Restore Option’ will be available)
You will have the following three restore option. Any one of them can be selected based on the requirement.
Keep the existing file and rename the file restored from the backup (Recommended practice)
Example:
Original File: document.txt (Existing Original File)
Restored File: document_restored.txt (New Restored File from the Backup)
Rename the existing file and use the original name for the file restored from the backup
Example:
Original File: report.doc (Existing Original File)
Renamed Original File: report_backup.doc (The above mentioned Original File is renamed)
Restored File: report.doc (New Restored File from the Backup which is given the Original File’s name)
Overwrite the existing file with the file restored from backup
Example:
Original File: presentation.pptx (Existing Original File)
Restored File: presentation.pptx (New Restored File from the Backup, overwriting the original)
Compression & Encryption
( If you have selected the Destination Host as ‘This Server’ then Compression & Encryption option will be available)
Enable Compression – Check the box aside and you will be able to restore all the selected files/folders as a compressed zip file. The compressed data will be available in the Restore Reports section and can be downloaded at any time.
Encrypt Compressed Data- If you want to encrypt the restored files/folders. You need to provide an Archive Password to secure the restored files/folders from unauthorized access.
Step 5: Review & Restore
Review the recovery configuration you have selected and click on Restore to start restoring the selected files & folder.
On successful restore, you can find the files & folders restored to the selected location Then, Navigate to the Recovery tab, click on the report icon next to the concerned backup job you have restored, and choose the Restore Report to view the recovery details and the Download link of the compressed file.
Note: If the restore process is interrupted, either manually (e.g., user aborts) or automatically (e.g., due to connectivity issues), it will result in a failed status. In the UI, the resume icon becomes enabled. It’s important to note that the restart of the restore process will not automatically resume unless the user manually clicks the resume icon.
Once when the restore process is restarted again then the restore will begin from Where It Left Off(WILO). E.g. If an interruption occurred say after 30% progress of the recovery then when a connection is again established and restored is manually resumed then the recovery will start from that 30% rather than 0%.
The WILO option is currently supported for restore of the File Level Backup alone.
