Offsite DR Configuration on BDRSuite Backup Server

Offsite DR Configuration on BDRSuite Backup Server

The Offsite Copy/Disaster Recovery (DR) option enables you to set up a secondary copy of your backup data, stored either offsite, or on the BDRSuite Cloud. This secondary copy serves as a reliable resource during times of disaster or data loss. With the offsite data copy, you have the flexibility to restore data to your secondary site or rebuild the backup server from scratch, ensuring business continuity and data protection.
To store a secondary copy of your backup data in your own data center or in BDRSuite Cloud for DR purposes, you need to configure Offsite Copy.
In the BDRSuite Backup Server, navigate to the Secondary copy -> Offsite DR -> Configure Offsite Copy/DR.

Download BDRSuite Offsite DR Server

The first step is to download the Offsite DR on a dedicated server. To do this, simply click the download button under the BDRSuite Offsite DR Server option. Click here to learn about the complete installation steps for the BDRSuite Offsite DR Server.
Once the installation is complete, login to the BDRSuite Offsite DR server web console to set up set the server.
Configure Offsite Copy/DR
Notes
Note: Before beginning the configure Offsite/DR process make sure to set up the BDRSuite offsite DR Server.

Step 1: Enable Offsite Copy/DR

Click on Enable Offsite Copy/DR button to enable offsite copy.

Step 2: Choose the Server to replicate backup data

Choose 'BDRSuite Offsite DR Server' option and enter the IP address or DNS name of the server where the Offsite Server is installed.

Step3: Configure the additional settings

Which include the following:
Offsite Replication Window
  1. The offsite Replication window option allows you to configure the time period during which the replication process will not run. Configure the Select Window option and choose the Start Time, End Time, and if it is applicable on all days or weekends. In this time period, the replication process will not run.
  2. Only when the time period is over, the replication process will start. Once done choosing Offsite Copy type, click Save and proceed to configure retention.
Notes
Note: The offsite copy type once saved cannot be changed. Ensure that you choose the right option.
Offsite Retention
  1. You can configure retention for your replicated backup data. The terms backup and backup copy are completely different. A backup copy “copies” the restore point of the backup data (VM) from the source backup server to the Offsite DR Server. The reason why the restore point is copied is, during the restore you can roll back to any of these restore points.
  2. You can configure retention for image-based backups and for application backups. Enable the Image Retention Status option and configure the daily merged recovery points from the Keep daily merged recovery points drop-down list. Similarly, for application backups, you can retain versions for the replicated data from the File & Application Retention Status.
Bandwidth Throttling
  1. The Bandwidth Throttling option allows you to limit the network bandwidth used by backup jobs, ensuring balanced network usage. You can either throttle bandwidth continuously or set a specific time frame. Additionally, you can define the maximum throttle limit (in Kbps, Mbps, or Gbps) and choose to disable throttling on weekends.
  2. Seed Backup Data Manually
  3. Seeding involves copying the initial full backup to a physical drive and manually transferring it to the Offsite DR Server, typically used when the data size is too large for network transfer.
  4. To manually seed backup data, first enable the Seed Backup Data Manually option on the Offsite Copy/DR page in the BDRSuite Backup Server.
Import Seed Migration
  1. The seeded data can be imported in the BDRSuite Offsite DR Server, by clicking on Management Tab in BDRSuite Offsite DR Server and selecting the BDR Servers, and then to Offsite Seeding. Browse the location of seed data on your secondary storage medium(HDD/USB) and click Submit to start the migration.
  2. Once the migration of seed backup data completes, the backups will be listed under the Offsite Seed Migration progress window. You can check the status of migration tasks. Offsite seed migration progress window includes - Backup Name, Server Name, Start Time, End Time, Status, and Remarks.
Manage Seed Backup
  1. The backups from various clients will be listed on the List Seed page and the dump process can be performed for the initial set of backups. Click the Action icon to perform the dump process.
  2. Once you click the action icon it asks for the dump location. Browse the dump location and click OK to continue.
  3. After the process is over, the backup is locally dumped for the migration. You can transfer it over a secondary storage medium to (HDD/USB) the offsite server.
  4. After completing all configurations, click 'Save'. All backup jobs on the BDRSuite Backup Server will then be prepared for offsite replication according to the configured schedules.
  5. Incase you do not want to include certain backup job in the offsite replication then you can do that from List Offsite DR Page.
