BDRSuite Backup for AWS allows you to restore the backup data of your EC2 instances using the following recovery options:
In the BDRSuite Backup for AWS console, Navigate to Recovery-> Restore Backup Data tab.
Step 1: Instances and Restore Type
All the backup jobs will be listed and you can click on respective restore.
Step 2: Restore Version
Based on the retention policy the restore points will be listed. Full backup restore points and the incremental backup restore points will be there for selection.
Step 3: Restore Options
For different types of recovery type selected the restore options will have various restore configuration which are as follows;
EC2 Instance Recovery from EBS Snapshot
You can choose this restore option to utilize backup snapshots from your AWS account for recovering an entire EC2 Instance.
Enter the following details;
Launch from
By default it will be Snapshots.
AMI Handling after Recovery
During recovery, a new AMI image will be registered to launch the backup instance. You can define the AMI Image handling after recovery as follows:
- Deregister the AMI after recovery– The image will be used for recovery and automatically deregistered after restore. No images will be available after recovery.
- Leave the AMI registered after recovery– AMI Image will not be deregistered after recovery. This is useful if you want to use this restored image to create similar instances in the future.
Key Pair
Choose Key Pair for the selected instance to perform the restoration.
No. of instances to Launch
You can restore multiple instances (up to 10) from the same backup data.
Select Volumes to attach to the restored Instance
All the volumes available in the backup instance will be listed. You can choose to restore all the volumes or select only certain volumes to restore.
Apart from selecting volumes, you can configure the following recovery settings:
Device
The device in the target instance where the volume needs to be attached.
Capacity
Capacity of the restored volume in GBs.
Disk Type Restore the volume in the required type. You can select from the following;
- General Purpose SSD (gp2)
- Provisioned IOPS SSD (io1)
- Cold HDD (sc1)
- Throughput Optimized (HDD)
- Magnet
IOPS
Required IOPS for the recovered volume.
Encryption status
This shows whether the backed-up volume is encrypted.
Delete on Termination
You can choose to automatically delete this volume after terminating the recovered instance.
Root Device
The OS volume that is required to boot the instance. This volume cannot be excluded from recovery. The Root Device is shown as a tick mark in the Root Device column.
EC2 Volume Recovery from EBS Snapshot
You can choose this restore option to utilize backup snapshots from your AWS account for recovering the individual EC2 Volumes.
Restore Volume Options
When attaching the backup volume to the same instance, based on the availability of the Device you choose for restore, different cases may arise.
So, you can choose the Attach Behavior to be followed during recovery by selecting one among the following:
Attach the restored volume only if the Device is free: Volume will be attached only if the target device is free.
Replace the existing volume with the restored volume and retain the existing volume: If the target device is taken, the attached volume will be switched with the recovery volume. The old volume will be detached but not deleted.
Replace the existing volume with the restored volume and delete the existing volume: The recovery volume will be attached to the device and the previously attached volume will be deleted.

EC2 Instance Recovery from Backup Repository
This restore option can be selected to recover an entire EC2 Instance using the backup data stored in the BDRSuite’s Backup Repository.
Account Name
You can click on the dropdown menu where your added AWS accounts are listed from which select an Account Name. To add a new AWS account, simply click on “Add AWS Account.”
AWS Region

Key Pair

This option allows you to specify an existing AWS key pair that will be used to securely connect to and manage the EC2 instances during backup and recovery operations. A key pair consists of a public and private key, ensuring secure authentication without needing to enter a password. This option is crucial when performing actions like restoring EC2 instances, as it grants access to the instance for further configuration or management after recovery.
Network Settings
Network Settings during recovery allow you to configure key network parameters such as VPC, subnets, and security groups for the restored EC2 instance.
Instance Name
Enter the Instance name.
Instance Type
Choose the Instance type.
Security Group
Choose the security group
EC2 Volume Recovery from Backup Repository
This restore option can be selected to recover the individual EC2 Volumes using the backup data stored in the BDRSuite’s Backup Repository.
Account Name
Select the AWS Account Name
AWS Region
Select the AWS Region
AWS Availability Zone
Select the AWS Availability Zone
Select Disk
Choose the Disk
Disk Mount
Using this option you can mount the backup disk on the Disk Management Services of the BDRSuite Backup Server through BDRSuite Virtual Drive.
- Select the Disk which you wish to mount.
Download VMs & Disk(s)
This restore options lets you Download the backup images to any location in any of the following file formats; VHD, VMDK, VHDX, Flat-VMDK and RAW.
- Select VMs/Disks to Download
- Choose the target location and format for download
File Level Recovery
- Select the files and folders you want to restore, by expanding the VM/ Host tree and their disks and configure the Restore options.
- Choose the restore location by clicking on the file icon and select the target location to restore the selected files.
- The restore location can be a local drive, or any network shared drive mapped with the BDRSuite Backup Server.
- Compress & Encrypt Restored Data;
- Compress Data: Checking the checkbox aside you will be able to restore all the selected files/folders as a compressed zip file. The compressed data will be available in the Restore Reports section and can be downloaded at any time.
- Encrypt Data: If you want to encrypt the restored files/folders. You need to provide an Archive Password to secure the restored files/folders from unauthorized access.
Step 4: Review & Restore
Review the restore configuration and click on Restore
