Configuring Remote Proxy for VMware Backup

Configuring Remote Proxy for VMware Backup

The Remote Proxy in BDRSuite/BDRCloud is a component designed to extend backup and recovery capabilities to remote environments, particularly for backing up virtual machines (VMs), physical servers, or hypervisors that are not directly connected to the backup server. It acts as an intermediary between the Backup Server and remote machines or hypervisors, allowing you to securely and efficiently manage backups across multiple sites.

Use cases

Centralized Management Across Distributed Sites:
By using Remote Proxies at each remote site, the enterprise can manage and configure backups for all their locations from a single centralized console, simplifying backup administration for the IT team.
Network Efficiency:
The Remote Proxy reduces the load on the central Backup Server by offloading backup operations to the local machine. This minimizes bandwidth usage and ensures that backup tasks are handled efficiently within the local network.
Secure Backup Operations:
The Remote Proxy ensures secure communication between the remote systems and the central Backup Server, protecting sensitive data during backup operations. Encryption and authentication mechanisms are used to safeguard data integrity and privacy.
Backup for Remote Virtualized Environments:
The company uses the Remote Proxy to back up VMware ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V environments in remote offices, ensuring that virtual machines are regularly backed up without requiring direct access to the main backup server.
Flexibility in Backing Up Diverse Environments:
With the Remote Proxy, the enterprise can back up a variety of systems, including physical servers, virtual machines, and even cloud-based workloads, across different network segments and locations, ensuring comprehensive data protection.
Lets see how to set up and configure the BDRSuite/BDRCloud Remote Proxy to add and back up VMware and Hyper-V Hypervisor hosts.

Step 1: Download the Remote Proxy Installer

  1. Access the Backup Console
Log in to the BDRSuite/BDRCloud Backup Server console.

  2. Navigate to Remote Proxy Section
Go to Data Sources → BDR Proxy → Remote Proxy.

  3. Download the Remote Proxy Installer
Click on Download the Remote Proxy Installer.

    Supported Operating Systems:

    • Windows Server 2012 and above
    • Windows 10 and above (64-bit)

Step 2: Install the Remote Proxy

  1. Copy the Installer
Copy the downloaded installer to a Windows machine that has access to the VMware host you want to back up.

  2. Run the Installer
Right-click on the installer and select Install.

  3. Follow the Installation Instructions

    • Accept the license agreement.
    • Enter the Backup Server's IP address or DNS Name to connect the Remote Proxy to the Backup Server.
    • Select Typical Installation for default settings or Custom for specific configurations.
    • Opt to install the Remote Proxy as a Windows Service for automatic operation.
    • Provide a Windows logon account with administrative privileges if required for the service.
  4. Verify Successful Installation
After installation, the Remote Proxy will automatically connect to the BDRSuite/BDRCloud Backup Server and appear in Data Sources → BDR Proxy → Remote Proxy.

Step 3: Configure Remote Proxy Settings

  1. Open the Remote Proxy Console
Launch the Remote Proxy console after installation.

  2. Adjust Configuration Settings
Go to the Settings menu and configure the following:

    • Port Configuration: Make sure the firewall allows communication through port 32004.
    • Backup Repository: Set up the local or network-based backup repository.
    • Concurrent Tasks: Define the maximum number of backup tasks that can run at once.
    • Remote Proxy Login Credentials: Change the default credentials (admin/admin) for better security.

Step 4: Add VMware Host

  1. Add VMware Host
In the Remote Proxy Console, go to Data Sources → Add Hypervisor Host.

  2. Select VMware Host
Choose VMware and enter the DNS name or IP address of the VMware vSphere . Provide the appropriate administrator credentials.

  3. Add Credentials
If necessary, add administrator or root permissions to authenticate the host.

  4. Review and Save
Review the details and click Save.

  5. Sync with Backup Server
The Hyper-V host will sync with the BDRSuite/BDRCloud Backup Server and will appear in the Data Sources section under Managed by Remote Proxy.

Step 5: Configure and Manage VMware Backups

  1. Access Backup Settings
Once the Hyper-V host is added, go to Backup → Configure Backup → Virtual Machines in the BDRSuite/BDRCloud Backup Server.

  2. Select VMware as the Hypervisor
Choose VMware as the hypervisor type.

  3. Configure Backup Options
    Set the backup preferences:

    • Backup Schedule: Define when backups should run.
    • Retention Policies: Set how long backup data will be retained.
    • Data Compression and Encryption: Enable compression and encryption for backup files.
  4. Save Configuration
Click Save to apply the backup settings and initiate backups for the VMware host via the Remote Proxy.
