Adding Proxmox Host for Backup

Adding Proxmox Host for Backup

Proxmox VE clusters and Standalone machines can be backed up using the BDRSuite Backup Server. Follow the steps below to add Proxmox VE or its clusters as a data source and configure backups effectively. Go to Data Sources -> Hypervisors -> Proxmox VE.

When adding a Proxmox VE or cluster, the BDRSuite Delegation Service (BDS) will be installed on the target machine, either automatically or manually.

Check the ' Adding Proxmox VE as data source' video.

Procedure to add Proxmox VE

Proxmox VE has to be added before you begin configuring the backup schedule. In the Data Sources tab choose ‘Add Proxmox VE. You will be taken to a page where you will see a message stating ‘No host added’ if you adding host for the first time.
Click on ‘Add Proxmox VE‘ and there are two methods provided on the opening page for adding which are as follows;
  1. Manual Agent Installation
  2. Automatic Agent Installation

1. Manual Agent Installation

Step 1: Download BDRSuite Delegation Service (BDS)
Debian Linux(64-bit)
Proxmox VE 7.4, Proxmox VE 8.0, Proxmox VE 8.1, Proxmox VE 8.2, Proxmox VE 8.3
Step 2: Backup Agent Installation on Individual Backup Hosts
Install the Agent setup file on the target host and follow the on-screen instructions for installation. Upon successful installation, the agent will automatically establish a connection to the BDRSuite Server and listed in BDRSuite server’s Data source page.

2. Automatic Agent Installation

This option allows you to add each host by entering their IP address and credentials. This will automatically install ‘BDRSuite Delegation Services’ on the target host
Add Proxmox VE by providing ‘Hostname/IP Address and its login credentials.
Notes
Note: You can add as many Proxmox VE to the BDRSuite Backup Server whenever required
IP Address/DNS Name
Enter the hostname or IP address of the hostname for which you have to proceed with the backup
The Hostname can be added using FQDN(Fully qualified domain name) ie., machine_name.domain_name. You can connect your host with BDRSuite Backup Server through the following combinations in the Hostname/IP Address section
  1. Hostname – Enter the Hostname alone
  2. Hostname@Domain name – Enter the hostname followed by @ and domain name
  3. Domain name/Hostname – Enter the domain name followed backslash (/) and the hostname
  4. 192.xxx.xxx.xxx – Enter the IP address

Note: If you have provided an invalid Hostname/IP address, the following alert message will be displayed “Unable to connect the Proxmox VE. Please check network connection settings
Credentials

  2. User Name: Enter the username of the specific host
  3. Password: The password of the host or IP Address
Port Number
  1. 42005: Port used for communication between BDRSuite Integration Service and BDRSuite Backup Server.
Notes
Note: BDRSuite Backup Server communicates with the Proxmox VE using the port that is set to 42005 as default. You can modify this port number as per your port number availability.
  1. 5000: Port used for running Python Server
Notes
Note: In the 5000 port the firewall must be added and only then the VMs will be listed while configuring backup.
Maximum Concurrent Tasks
Specify the number of parallel backup tasks each (BDS) BDRSuite Delegation Service can process simultaneously.
Save the host after adding all the details.
The Proxmox VE will be added to the BDRSuite Backup Server.
Notes
Notes:
  • For Proxmox clusters, ensure that the BDS Agent is installed and configured on all nodes to enable seamless backups.

  • When a cluster node is added, all newly added nodes will be grouped together and displayed as a single entity under the specified cluster name.

  • All nodes of the cluster must be added either through manual agent installation or automatic agent push.

  • Verify connectivity between the BDRSuite Backup Server and all nodes in the Proxmox cluster.
