Cause:
This error affects incremental backups of virtual machines, particularly those relying on Changed Block Tracking (CBT) running on ESXi 5.x hosts.
Solution:
To resolve this issue for an impacted virtual machine, follow these steps:
1. Shut down the virtual machine.
2. Remove any existing snapshots associated with the virtual machine.
3. Disable CBT for the virtual machine.
4. Remove or rename any files with the *-ctk.vmdk extension in the virtual machine directory.
5. Re-enable CBT for the virtual machine.
6. Power on the virtual machine.
7. Ensure that the virtual machine is not migrated using Storage vMotion or Storage DRS.
