Steps to Add Proxmox VE Standalone host or Cluster Node through Manual Agent Installation

KB ID: 115227

Overview

This article provides detailed instructions on adding a Proxmox VE (Virtual Environment) host or cluster to the BDRSuite Backup Server by manually installing the BDS Agent. This setup enables Proxmox backups, allowing you to securely back up and manage virtual machines (VMs) from the BDRSuite console.

Supported Platforms

  • Proxmox VE: Versions 8.3, 8.2, 8.1, 8.0, and 7.4

Prerequisites

  1. Ensure that the BDR Suite Backup Server is installed and accessible.
  2. Ensure that the Proxmox host is running and can be reached from the Backup Server.
  3. Firewall rules must allow communication on port 32004 for the BDR Suite delegation service.

How to Video

Watch the following video on how to add a Proxmox VE host to BDRSuite backup server with manual Installation of BDS Agent

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Access the Proxmox Host Machine:

  1. Open a terminal and connect to the Proxmox VE host machine.

2. Install the BDS Agent Manually:

  1. Download the Agent Build
  1. Download the appropriate BDRSuite Delegation Service (BDS) version for the host OS from the backup server console.
  1. Execute the Installation Command:
    1. Run the appropriate command on the Proxmox host machine to start the installation process.
    1. Follow the prompts to install the agent, accepting the License Agreement when prompted.
    1. During the installation, select the "Proxmox Backup and File-Level Backup"  options.
NotesNote: When you select the option "Proxmox Backup and File-Level Backup" both Promox backup and File level backup for the BDRSuite Backup Server will be enabled.

3. Configure the BDS Agent:

  1. Enter the BDR Server IP:
    1. Input the IP address of your BDR Server when prompted.

  1. Enter the Backup Port details: This option allows you to specify the ports used for backing up virtual machines, which are exposed via the NBD protocol. You can define ports either individually or as a range, for example, 3265, 3500-3800, 73000, or 33400-33490.

Data Sources >> Hypervisors >> Proxmox
  1. Verify that the Proxmox host is listed.

4. Configure Backups

  1. Navigate to the Backup Tab
  1.  Go to the "Backup" tab in the BDR server console.
  1. Configure Backup:
  1. Select "Configure Backup," then choose "Virtual Machines," followed by "Proxmox."
  1. Enter Backup Details:
  1. Enter the required backup details and click "Next."
  2. Select the VMs you wish to back up from the list of added Proxmox hosts and complete the backup configuration process.

Notes
Notes:
  • For Proxmox clusters, ensure that the BDS Agent is installed and configured on all nodes to enable seamless backups.

  • When a cluster node is added, all newly added nodes will be grouped together and displayed as a single entity under the specified cluster name.

  • All nodes of the cluster must be added either through manual agent installation or automatic agent push.

  • Verify connectivity between the BDRSuite Backup Server and all nodes in the Proxmox cluster.

By following these steps, you will successfully set up BDS agents on your Proxmox VE host or cluster and configure backups for your virtual machines through the BDRSuite console.
