Virtual Machine Not in a Valid State for Backup
KB ID: 115120
Issue:
Encountering the error message "The Virtual Machine is not in a valid state for backup."
Cause:
This issue may arise when the Virtual Machine (VM) is not in a valid state during the backup process. Several reasons can contribute to this problem:
1. The cluster disk containing the VM's Virtual Hard Disk file is offline in the Cluster.
2. The Scale-out File Server (SOFS) role is in an offline state.
3. Checkpoint deletion for the Virtual Machine is taking an extended amount of time.
Solution:
1. Cluster Disk Status Check:
- Connect to the cluster through FailOver Cluster Manager on any cluster node.
- Navigate to Cluster -> Storage -> Disks -> Respective Cluster Disk.
- If the cluster disk is not online, change its status to online.
- Retry the backup job.
2. Scale-out File Server (SOFS) Role Check:
- Connect to the cluster through FailOver Cluster Manager on any cluster node.
- Navigate to Cluster -> Roles -> Respective SOFS role.
- If the SOFS role is not online, change its status to online.
- Retry the backup job.
3. Checkpoint Deletion Check:
- Open Hyper-V Manager.
- Check if the checkpoint deletion is in progress for the Virtual Machine.
- Wait for the deletion process to complete.
- Retry the backup job.
