Essential Prerequisites for Installing BDRSuite Integration Service (BIS) on Microsoft Hyper-V

Prerequisites for Installing BDRSuite Integration Service (BIS) on Microsoft Hyper-V

KB ID: 115083
Summary:
BDRSuite Backup Server employs the BDRSuite Integration Service (BIS) to facilitate seamless backup of virtual machines on Microsoft Hyper-V servers. This article outlines the essential prerequisites that must be fulfilled to ensure the successful installation of BIS on the designated Hyper-V server.
Prerequisites:
1. Access Privilege for Microsoft Hyper-V:
To establish successful communication for backup, the credential employed to add the Hyper-V server (target host) for backup should possess one of the following privileges:
  1. Domain administrator
  2. Administrator
  3. User with administrator privilege
2. Access Privilege in BDR Backup Server Host:
Within the BDRSuite Backup Server host environment, ensure that the Windows service named 'BDRSuite Backup Server for Virtual Physical Workloads' operates using an administrator user account. To achieve this:
  1. Launch the Run window by pressing 'Win + R' keys.
  2. Type 'services.msc' and click OK.
  3. Right-click on the 'Vembu BDR Backup Server for Virtual Physical Workloads' service, then select 'Properties'.
  4. Navigate to the 'Logon' tab. Opt for the 'This account' radio button and provide the administrator user privilege in the format '.\username' along with the corresponding password. Click OK.
  5. Stop and restart the service to apply the updated logon credentials.
3. Access to the 'Admin$' Folder in the Target Hyper-V Host:
Ensure that the BDR Backup Server host possesses access to the 'Admin$' folder on the target Hyper-V host. Perform the following steps:
    a. Verify the accessibility of the UNC path '\\IP Address of target host\admin$' in the 'Run' dialog. Proceed to Prerequisite 4 if accessible.
    b. If the UNC path is inaccessible, perform the following sub-steps:
        Step 1:
  1. Open Control Panel and navigate to System and Security -> Windows Firewall -> Advanced Settings.
  2. Within the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security dialog box, select 'Inbound Rules'.
  3. Under the Actions pane, click 'New Rule'.
  4. In the New Inbound Rule Wizard, opt for the 'Predefined' rule type.
  5. Select the 'Remote Service Management' rule from the dropdown menu and click 'Next'.
  6. Continue with the 'Enabled by Default' option and proceed by clicking 'Next'.
  7. On the Action page, choose 'Allow the Connection' and then click 'Finish'.
        Step 2
  1. Verify the running status of the 'Server Service' and 'Windows Remote Management (WS-management)' services by accessing the 'services.msc' interface through the Run window.
  2. Upon completion of the above steps, input '\\IP Address of target host\admin$' in the Run dialog within the BDR Backup Server host. If access to the Admin$ share is established, proceed to the next prerequisite.
4. Access to Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI):
Guarantee unobstructed remote connection by implementing the following measures in the target Hyper-V host:
  1. Open Control Panel and navigate to System and Security -> Windows Firewall -> Advanced Settings.
  2. Click 'Inbound Rules' within the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security dialog box.
  3. Select 'New Rule' in the Actions pane.
  4. In the New Inbound Rule Wizard, opt for the 'Predefined' rule type.
  5. Choose the 'Windows Management Instrumentation' Rule from the dropdown and click 'Next'.
  6. Continue with the 'Enabled by Default' option and proceed by clicking 'Next'.
  7. On the Action page, choose 'Allow the Connection' and then click 'Finish'.
Confirm the running status of the 'Windows Management Instrumentation' service by accessing the 'services.msc' interface through the Run window.
5. Access to Remote Registry:
In the target Hyper-V host, ensure the operational status of the 'Remote Registry' service by accessing the 'services.msc' interface through the Run window.
6. WBEMTest Verification:
Following the completion of the aforementioned prerequisites, conduct the WBEMTest to validate remote connectivity from the BDR Backup Server host to the target host:
  1. Open the Run window using 'Win + R' keys on the BDR Backup Server host.
  2. Type 'wbemtest' and click OK.
  3. In the namespace field, input: '\\IP Address of target host\root\cimv2'.
  4. In the credential section, input the Username and Password of the target host and click 'Connect'.
  5.  If any errors occur during the WBEMTest, revisit the prerequisites.
  6. A successful WBEMTest indicates readiness to add the target Hyper-V Server for backup within the BDR Backup Server.
Note: For Hyper-V Clusters, BDRSuite Integration Service (BIS) will be installed on all cluster nodes. It is imperative to ensure that the prerequisites are fulfilled for all nodes.
