Prerequisites for Installing BDRSuite Integration Service (BIS) on Microsoft Hyper-V

KB ID: 115083
Overview:
To back up virtual machines in Hyper-V using BDRSuite, the BDRSuite Integration Service (BIS) is automatically installed on the Hyper-V Server when it is added for backup. To ensure a successful installation, the following prerequisites must be met.
Prerequisites:
1. Access Privilege for Microsoft Hyper-V (Standalone, Cluster, and SMB Server):
The credential used to add the Hyper-V Server (Target Host) for backup must have one of the following privileges:
  1.    Domain administrator
  2.    Administrator
  3.    User with administrator privilege
2. Access Privilege in the BDRSuite Backup Server Host:
On the BDRSuite Backup Server host, ensure that the Windows service 'BDRSuite Backup Server for Virtual Physical Workloads' runs in an administrator user account.
  1.    Press 'Win + R' keys on the keyboard to open the Run window, then type 'services.msc' and click OK.
  2.    Right-click on the service 'Vembu BDRSuite Backup Server for Virtual Physical Workloads' and select 'Properties'.
  3.    Navigate to the 'Logon' tab, click on the 'This account' radio button, and provide the administrator user privilege (username in the format:.\username) and password. Click OK.
  4.    Stop and restart the service to apply the new logon.
3. Access to the Folder "Admin$" in the Target Hyper-V Host:
Ensure that the BDRSuite Backup Server host has access to the "Admin$" folder of the target host by typing "\\IP Address of target host\admin$" in Run and clicking OK.
   a. If the UNC path is accessible, move to Prerequisite 4.
   b. If the UNC path is not accessible, perform the following steps:
Step 1: Add the Inbound rule in the Hyper-V target host to avoid firewall blocking the Windows Management Instrumentation function.
  1. Open Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Firewall > Advanced Settings.
  2. Click 'Inbound Rules' on the left, then under the Actions pane on the right, click 'New Rule'.
  3. Choose the 'Predefined' option as Rule Type.
  4. Select the 'Remote Service Management' rule from the dropdown and click 'Next'.
  5. Proceed with the 'Enabled by Default' option and click Next.
  6. On the Action page, choose 'Allow the Connection' and click 'Finish'.
Step 2: Ensure the following services are running in the target host:
  1. Press 'Win + R' keys on the keyboard to open the Run window, then type 'services.msc' and click OK
  2. Check the services 'Server Service' and 'Windows Remote Management (WS-management)' and confirm if their status is running.
4. Access to Windows Management Instrumentation:
Add the Inbound rule in the target Hyper-V host to avoid the firewall blocking the remote connection.
  1.    Open Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Firewall > Advanced Settings.
  2.    Click 'Inbound Rules' on the left, then under the Actions pane on the right, click 'New Rule'.
  3.    Choose the 'Predefined' option as Rule Type.
  4.    Select the 'Windows Management Instrumentation' Rule from the dropdown and click 'Next'.
  5.    Proceed with the 'Enabled by Default' option and click Next.
  6.    On the Action page, choose 'Allow the Connection' and click 'Finish'.
  7.    Ensure the service 'Windows Management Instrumentation' is running in the target host.
5. Access to Remote Registry:
In the target Hyper-V host, press the 'Win + R' keys on the keyboard to open the Run window, then type 'services.msc' and click OK.
  1.    Check the service 'Remote Registry' and ensure its status is running.
6. WBEMTest Verification:
Once the above prerequisites are met, perform the WBEMTest to test remote connectivity to the target host from the BDRSuite Backup Server host.
  1.    On the BDRSuite Backup Server host, press 'Win + R' keys on the keyboard to open the Run window, then type 'wbemtest' and click OK.
  2.    In the namespace field, enter the following: \\IP Address of target host\root\cimv2.
  3.    Under the credential section, enter the Username and Password of the target host and click 'Connect'.
  4.    If any error occurs on the WBEMTest, recheck the prerequisites.
  5.    Once the WBEMTest is successful, you can add the target Hyper-V Server for backup in the BDRSuite Backup Server.
Note: For Hyper-V Cluster, BDRSuite Integration Service (BIS) will be installed on all nodes of the cluster. Ensure that the prerequisites are met for all nodes.
