Resolving Backup Failures for AppAware Settings Enabled VMs

KB ID: 104078
This KB article identifies the underlying causes and provides solutions for backup failures of app aware settings enabled VMs.
Scenario 1: Backup failure for appaware settings enabled VM due to failure in copying appaware guest tool inside the VM
Cause 1:
The backup process fails because the appaware guest tool cannot be copied inside the VM. This occurs when the user account used for guest processing lacks permission to copy the appaware tool.
Solution:
Verify that the user account used for guest processing has the necessary permissions to copy the appaware guest tool.
Cause 2:
The installation of the appaware guest tool may fail, If the C:\ drive on the VM is running out of free space.
Solution:
Ensure adequate free space on the C:\ drive of the VM to prevent installation failures.
Scenario 2: Backup failure for appaware settings enabled VM due to failure in installing appaware guest tool inside the VM
Cause:
The backup fails because the appaware guest tool can't be installed in the VM. This happens when the user account can copy the tool but doesn't have the required permissions to install applications.
Solution:
Ensure that the user account used for guest processing has the required permissions to install applications.
Additional Tips:
  1. Regularly review and update permissions for user accounts involved in guest processing to avoid similar issues.
  2. Implement disk space monitoring and management practices to maintain adequate free space for backup operations.
  3. Periodically test backup processes to ensure their effectiveness and address any potential issues proactively.
Following these steps will effectively troubleshoot and resolve backup failures for appaware settings enabled VMs, ensuring smooth and reliable backup operations.
